If God Is Real, Why Am I Still Hurting? (A Gentle, Honest Look at Pain, Faith, and God’s Mercy)

A Question Many Ask in Silence

There are questions people don’t ask out loud.

Not in church, not with Christian friends, not even sometimes in prayer.

One of those questions sounds like this: “If God is real… why am I still hurting?”

Maybe you’ve asked it in a quiet room.
Maybe late at night, when everything feels heavier.
Maybe after you tried to believe, tried to pray, tried to do the “right things”, and the pain didn’t leave.

“How long, Lord? Will You forget me forever?
How long will You hide Your face from me?”
Psalm 13:1

If that’s you, you’re not strange. You’re human, and you’re not alone.

I asked this same question three years ago in the hospital when every medication I took for recovery wasn’t working, and prayers seemed not to be working either, but still, that experience was a training to build my faith strong with God. Read my post on My Testimony From Mercy to Faith: How God Gave Me a Second Life.

This post won’t shame you for asking.
It won’t rush you into pretending you’re okay.

Instead, let’s sit with the question and see what Scripture, real life, and God’s mercy actually reveal.

Why Do People Ask, “If God Is Real, Why Am I Still Hurting?”

Because pain feels like absence, and silence feels like distance.

When people hurt, they often assume:

  • If God is real, He should stop this.
  • If God cares, He should act faster.
  • If faith works, it should remove pain.

Those thoughts don’t come from rebellion.
They come from expectation mixed with disappointment.

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick.” Proverbs 13:12

Pain has a way of shaking what we thought faith would look like.

So let me ask you something gently:

  • Did anyone ever tell you that believing in God would mean you’d stop hurting?
  • Or did you quietly assume that must be true?

Scripture actually tells a different story.

Does the Bible Say God’s People Won’t Hurt?

No. The Bible is honest about pain, even among faithful people.

Some of the strongest believers in Scripture asked hard questions while hurting.

David cried, Job questioned, Jeremiah wept, and even Jesus grieved.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 34:18

Notice something important:

God does not shame the brokenhearted.
He draws near to them.

Pain is not proof that God is fake.
Pain is part of living in a broken world.

“In this world you will have trouble.” John 16:33

Jesus didn’t deny pain.
He acknowledged it and then offered hope.

If God Loves Me, Why Didn’t He Stop This?

This is one of the hardest questions.

And it deserves a careful, honest response, not a quick religious phrase.

Here’s the truth Scripture shows us:

God’s love does not always look like immediate relief.
But it always looks like presence, purpose, and redemption.

“Though He brings grief, He will show compassion,
so great is His unfailing love.”
Lamentations 3:32

Let me ask you something to think about:

  • Have there been moments when God didn’t remove the pain, but somehow carried you through it?
  • Have you survived things you didn’t think you would?

That endurance did not come from nowhere.

God’s Mercy Often Meets Us Before Faith Does

This matters deeply for a blog called Mercy to Faith.

Many people believe they need strong faith before God shows up.

But the Bible shows the opposite.

God often meets people before they believe fully, obey fully, or understand fully.

“While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

Mercy comes first.
Faith grows later.

If you are hurting and unsure, God is not waiting for you to “get it right.”

“A bruised reed He will not break,
and a smouldering wick He will not snuff out.”
Isaiah 42:3

Let that sit for a moment.

What If Pain Is Not Proof God Is Gone, but Proof You Are Human?

This question can change how we see everything.

Pain does not mean God has abandoned you.
It means you are living in a world where things are not yet fully restored.

“We know that the whole creation has been groaning.” Romans 8:22

And you are allowed to groan too.

God never told His children to pretend they don’t hurt.

In fact, He invites honesty.

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7

Casting means you don’t carry it alone.

What Should I Do When I Believe God Is Real, but I Still Hurt?

You bring your pain honestly and stay open.

Here are a few gentle, practical steps that don’t require “strong faith”:

1. Tell God the Truth

You don’t need polished prayers.

“Pour out your hearts to Him.” Psalm 62:8

2. Stop Comparing Your Journey

Someone else’s healing timeline is not your failure.

“Each heart knows its own bitterness.” Proverbs 14:10

3. Stay Where Mercy Is Present

Surround yourself with grace, not pressure.

“Encourage one another daily.” Hebrews 3:13

Faith grows best in safe soil.

A Biblical Example: Hagar

Hagar was abandoned, mistreated, and alone.

She did not start strong.
She did not pray perfectly.

But God met her anyway.

“You are the God who sees me.” Genesis 16:13

Her pain did not disqualify her.
It positioned her to encounter God personally.

Ask yourself:

  • What if God sees you right now, even in your confusion?
  • What if being seen matters more than having answers?

FAQs: Real Questions People Ask About God and Pain

Does God punish people with pain?

No. Pain is not always punishment.
“There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1

Why do bad things happen to good people?

The Bible says life is affected by a broken world, not just personal choices.
“Time and chance happen to them all.” Ecclesiastes 9:11

Is it okay to doubt God while hurting?

Yes. Doubt does not scare God.
“Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.” Mark 9:24

Will God ever heal this pain?

Healing may come in stages, sometimes through comfort before change.
“He heals the brokenhearted.” Psalm 147:3

What if I’m tired of waiting?

God understands weariness.
“Come to Me, all who are weary.” Matthew 11:28

A Gentle Invitation Before You Go

If this question: “If God is real, why am I still hurting?” has ever crossed your mind, you’re not alone.

If you are hurting and wondering whether God is real, here is something steady to hold:

Your pain does not cancel God’s presence.
Your questions do not cancel His mercy.
Your weakness does not disqualify you.

Faith does not start with certainty.
It often starts with a whisper:

“God… if You’re there… help me.”

“The Lord is near to all who call on Him in truth.” Psalm 145:18

Your story matters more than you think.

If you feel comfortable, share your thoughts, questions, or personal experience in the comments. Your honesty could be the very thing that helps someone else feel seen and understood.

“Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story.” Psalm 107:2

You don’t need perfect words. Just truth.

And if you’re looking for daily encouragement, Scripture, and real-life faith stories from people walking through pain, one helpful resource many believers turn to is the YouVersion Bible App. It offers free Bible translations, reading plans, and stories that meet people right where they are:

“Faith comes by hearing.” Romans 10:17

Wherever you are on your journey, remember this:
God’s mercy is already reaching toward you, and faith can grow from here.
